Mozart’s Salzburg & Austrian Lake District including The Oberammergau Passion Play

Led by Roger and Mary Jones from Christian Music Ministries (tbc)

Sadly, the 2020 holidays have been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but will now take place in 2022. The holiday is expected to replicate the same programme (as below), but could be subject to some changes. Prices TBC.

From May to October 2022 the villagers of Oberammergau in Bavaria will again perform their world famous Passion Play — a tradition they have maintained since 1634.

The performance involves over 2,000 villagers, a full orchestra and a vast stage, and commemorates Christ’s journey into Jerusalem, his death and his resurrection.

We combine this remarkable experience with two different holidays — the fairytale settings of Bavaria’s castles and lakes and the natural wonders of the Austrian Lake District.

For more information about any aspect of the holidays or to discuss taking your group on their own exclusive tailor-made Passion Play tour, call Rachel Hayto on 01858 881508.

Day 1 – Travel to Austria

We meet at Birmingham Airport for our scheduled flight to Munich. On arrival we are met by our tour manager who will accompany us throughout our tour. We then transfer in our private executive coach to the 3* Hotel
Gasthof Bräuwirth (or similar) at Lengfelden for a five night stay. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening.

Day 2 – St Gilgen, cruise on Lake Wolfgangsee & St Wolfgang

After time at leisure in St Gilgen we take an included one way cruise from St Wolfgang on picturesque Lake Wolfgangsee. Time is at leisure in St Wolfgang this afternoon, or you may choose to join our optional excursion on the Schafbergbahn, the steepest cogwheel railway in Austria that famously featured in ‘The Sound of Music’. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening.

Day 3 – Hallein salt mines, Berchtesgaden & Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest

The salt mines at Hallein, one of the oldest in the world, brought riches to the archbishops and built the magnificent city of Salzburg. At Berchtesgaden this afternoon you have the option of a visit to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, given to Hitler as a 50th birthday present and unscathed from the bombings of the Allied Forces during World War II. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening.

Day 4 – Salzburg & Mozart Dinner Concert

Salzburg is our destination today and on arrival there is an included guided tour around the old city taking in sights such as the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Cathedral and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens to name but a few. This afternoon we visit Mozart’s Birthplace. W.A. Mozart was born on 27th January 1756 in Hagenauer Haus at No.9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg. Mozart spent his childhood and much of his youth there. This authentically reconstructed middle class apartment is home to original certificates, letters and memorabilia that document Mozart’s life in Salzburg. We continue to Mozart Residence, where he moved to in 1773. Dedicated to the life and works of Mozart, we see the composers’ fortepiano at the museum, as well as many original documents and portraits. This evening we enjoy a Mozart Dinner Concert at St Peter Stiftskulinarium in Salzburg. The culinary concert takes place in the opulent Baroque Hall and includes a four course set dinner.

Day 5 – Kaiservilla at Bad Ischl & Hallstatt

Kaiservilla at Bad Ischl is the former summer capital of the great Austro-Hungarian monarchy and associated with the Hapsburg’s for at least 700 years. It was here on 28th July 1914 that the declaration of war on Serbia was signed. We spend the afternoon at leisure in the picturesque town of
Hallstatt, ‘the pearl of Austria’, and the site of an early Iron Age culture form 800 to 400 BC and considered to be the oldest, continuously inhabited settlement in Europe. Dinner is included in our hotel this evening.

Day 6 – Oberammergau Passion Play

We leave Austria and travel to Oberammergau. After checking in to our allocated Category C hotels and guesthouses in and around Oberammergau followed by time for lunch, we take our Category 1 or Category 2 seats for the Passion Play. The performance runs from 1.30pm till 9.30pm with a three hour interval for dinner.

Day 7 – Fly Home

We transfer to the airport for our direct scheduled flight back to Birmingham.

NB: Please note we reserve the right to alter the above itinerary if required for operational reasons. Flight details are subject to change. Given the historic nature of the places visited, a certain degree of walking will be involved, and this holiday may not be suitable for those with mobility problems. This holiday and the flights are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Tailored Travel’s ATOL number is 5605. Price based on twin share. Minimum numbers required.
