This holiday will involve short sessions of gentle garden work on the South Garden with refreshments, evening talks and a trip to Bicton Botanical Gardens.

Excursions:

1. South Devon Railway

The multi-award winning South Devon Railway (SDR), a seven mile line which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, is one of Devon’s and the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west. When you ride the South Devon Railway you can also visit the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Dartmoor Otters &Buckfast Butterflies: 3 great attractions, 1 amazing day!

2. Exeter, with a visit to Exeter cathedral and Exeter’s underground passages.

Exeter is a city that inspires. A place with a rhythmic beat. Most of all, it is somewhere to get away from it all. A place to get up, get out and visit. There really is so much to be explored, from the city’s rich heritage and culture to the miles of quayside walks. Modern day amenities, cafes, bistros and shops are abundant and make for a splendid atmosphere whilst out venturing.

Exeter Cathedral dates back over 900 years, but there has been a Christian presence on the site we know today as Cathedral Green since Roman times. Explore this ancient place and discover the stories of the beautiful vaulted ceiling, stunning stained glass, and intricate carvings of stone and wood. Exeter’s Underground Passages were built in the 14th & 15th centuries to bring a supply of fresh drinking water into the city. A visit to Exeter’s Underground Passages includes a 10 minute film presentation, a 25 minute tour underground and an opportunity to explore the interactive exhibition.

3. Theatre trip to Sidmouth Manor Pavilion

(or, depending what is on at the theatre, a visit to Sidmouth Norman Lockyer Observatory)

These days I am happily settled in Bath where I have family and work as a guide. My career has taken me from teaching to broadcasting to running sailing courses and many more mundane things along the way, so I hope that all this experience can help me to keep tours running smoothly.”

About Janet Dowling

Janet Dowling: Storyteller, Writer, Life Story Coach

I am Janet Dowling (as if you hadn’t guessed!). If you stir the pot that is me, bubbling up from the depths are a storyteller, a writer, a community storyteller, a life story coach and a creative supervisor. Good things, as they say, come in small packages. But that is a whole other story!

I’m also researching material for Devon Ghost Tales, a book to send shivers down your spine. It’s a slow process, as I can’t work on it after dark because I manage to scare myself! Mind you, looking in a mirror does that! Devon Ghost Tales will be published by the History Press in October 2018.

I work with metaphor and storytelling to enable people to explore new ideas, discover different perspectives of themselves and others and create their own changes in their lives.

I am passionate about the role that metaphors and stories play in our lives, and the opportunities that they open up for all of us. Stories enable listeners to learn about different ways to overcome struggles and adversity in their own way, to explore different perspectives on life, to give them hope for change and eventually fulfil their life goals.

Sometimes we have to have some magic just to make the leap in our imaginations, so that we can envisage a future that can be different. Knowing more about how the future could be, gives us the strength to change our own paths.

Programme

Monday through to Thursday 10 to12.30 pm (2 and half hour sessions)..Afternoons are free to do what you wish

How to learn a story to tell

As the days wane, the nights close in and the trees don their vibrant hues, a chill creeps into the air. Leaves take to the air in an elegant dance, pirouetting around the tree trunks to their own orchestral rustling; not the bite of wintry blusters, but just a nip to let us know a new season is at hand. Welcome it with our ‘Music in Autumn’ break, with local talents entertaining you in our magnificent Music Room on select evenings and enjoy the vibrant colours on offer during the day in and around Sidmouth.

Devon's Crealy Adventure Park
Devon's Crealy Great Adventure Park is an award winning family attraction located just minutes from junction 30 of the M5 near Exeter. The Park has over 60 rides and attractions set in over 100 acres of glorious Devon countryside. We are proud to be a park that caters for the whole family, from the smallest children to parents and grandparents alike. There are over 100 animals, 30 outdoor attractions and a variety of other activities to choose from. With heart-stopping rides for thrill seekers to soft-play and animal petting for younger guests, Devon's Crealy is the South West's number one family day out.

Seaton Tramway

Seaton Tramway offer a fun day out for all the family, and a chance to step back in time when you ride one of the trams. They operate narrow gauge heritage trams alongside the river Axe estuary in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, through 3 miles of unspoilt countryside, and 2 nature reserves giving unrivalled views of the abundant wading bird life. he Tramway links Colyton with the coastal resort of Seaton (one of the gateway towns on the Jurassic Coast, which to date is Britain's only natural World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO), and the ancient town of Colyton known as “Devon's Most Rebellious Town” for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. The tram journey takes about half an hour, and they operate open toppers, or enclosed saloons, depending on weather conditions.

Tours of the Seaton branch line are also available, which offers fascinating stories behind the Southern Railway line, with a former employee as your guide, showing you points of interest along the way.

A great day trip for families especially as it's a delight for all age ranges, so why not bring nan and granddad along too?!
