Peninsulas, Coast, Lakes and Fells

The glittering expanse of Morecombe Bay is spread out in front of you as you pause for rest on a clifftop path fringed with sea thrift. This is Southern Lakeland rambling at its best.

Explore the dramatic scenery and shores of the Cumbrian coast, together with the rolling wooded fells, tranquil tarns and lakeshores of the south western Lake District. Before the coming of the railways, this was the gateway to The Lakes with the route being a guided walk across the sands of Morecambe Bay from Lancaster to Grange-over-Sands on the inner of the Furness Peninsulas. We walk up to the limestone summit of Hampsfell for magnificent views over Morecambe Bay and the southern Fells towards Keswick. There’s an enjoyable scenic train journey across the Kent Channel estuary to Arnside to explore the lovely coastal area around Silverdale as well as climbing ‘The Knott’.

Inland we walk the south-eastern Fells around Windermere and Coniston Water with panoramic views over the lakes from the surrounding hills or from the closer viewpoint of a motor launch.

We’re based to the south of the Lake District National Park boundary and right on the Morecambe Bay coast at Kents Bank, just along the coast and one stop on the railway line from the genteel but faded Victorian resort of Grange-over-Sands. The Cumbrian Coastal Way runs past the end of the hotel’s gardens.

Please note: Single rooms without supplements are subject to availability.

After many years in education, I was thrilled to be able to train as a  Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria.  It seems to be the perfect job,  combining my love of talking to people with my many and varied interests. I like to think that I am following the example of Cumbrian resident John Ruskin who was interested in art, architecture, the environment and society (amongst many other interests) though I am not quite the expert that he was!

Day 4 - Wednesday

Today is a free day for you to enjoy at leisure.  Perhaps you will take the train into Grange and enjoy a gentle stroll along the well-planted promenade?  And then why not reward yourself with tea and cake in one of the excellent tea-shops?!

Day 5 - Thursday

Our first visit of the day is to the spectacular Arts and Crafts house, Blackwell.  We will have all morning to enjoy the wonderful design, crafts and woodwork.  For lunch we head up to Low Fell near Crosthwaite where we will see a lovely garden hewn out of the bedrock.  Finally we will visit some allotments where you will see a huge variety of gardening styles.

Day 6 - Friday

On our final day we will visit two private gardens in the morning plus a garden and nursery in the afternoon.  There will be opportunities to buy unusual plants to take home for your own garden.

For those who have been on a Homes and Gardens holiday before, we will be visiting six new gardens as well as a couple which we will be seeing at a different time of year.

There will be uneven paths and walking sticks or poles are highly recommended if you have them.  The holiday is taken at a gentle pace and there are always plenty of opportunities for a sit down!

Ron’s breaks are very popular and it’s easy to understand why! Daily workshops will help you with your dancing, whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, and you’ll enjoy dancing both morning and evening, with the afternoons free to take in the fabulous Lakeland scenery.

Meet one of our guides....

Ron Coxall
Ron has always danced, earning his first medal with the Empire Society Teachers of Dance (ESTD) at the age of ten. He first met country dancing in 1969 with Hitchin Staplers in Hertfordshire and took to it like a duck to water. Ron was soon encouraged to call and now he is well known nationally and internationally through his dance compositions.

He has called for Club Dances, Balls, Festivals, Workshops, and Dance Holidays, here, on the Continent and in Australia. "I do like the atmosphere at the occasions when I call to be relaxed and friendly; the dancers should be able to feel free to concentrate on dancing and fun without nervous stress and tension."

Ron has a great following within Christian Guild and his weeks get booked up very early so it is recommended to book as soon as possible

The Holiday

We want you to relax, socialise, enjoy your Country Dancing and the atmosphere of our Abbot Hall Hotel.  The itinerary for this holiday is intended to balance all of these aims.

The programme for your dancing holiday is planned to give you the maximum amount of dancing tuition, relaxed dancing and free time.

There will be interesting morning dance workshops, with free afternoons and evening of social dancing, so if you do have any particular technique you wish to explore you can ask Ron for his expert help and advice.

Anyone, from enthusiastic novices to seasoned dancers, will be able to improve their fancy footwork on these fun and friendly Country Dancing holidays.

During the holiday, we will also offer optional local tours.

Meet one of our Blue Badge Guides....

Jill Durnford

After many years in education, I was thrilled to be able to train as a  Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria. It seems to be the perfect job,  combining my love of talking to people with my many and varied interests. I like to think that I am following the example of Cumbrian resident John Ruskin who was interested in art, architecture, the environment and society (amongst many other interests) though I am not quite the expert that he was!
