Meet one of our Blue Badge Guides....

Jill Durnford

After many years in education, I was thrilled to be able to train as a  Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria. It seems to be the perfect job,  combining my love of talking to people with my many and varied interests. I like to think that I am following the example of Cumbrian resident John Ruskin who was interested in art, architecture, the environment and society (amongst many other interests) though I am not quite the expert that he was!

The Lake District has been a significant muse for some of England’s well knownauthors and poets. We will explore the romantic settings that inspired the poetry of John Ruskin and William Wordsworth, and the landscapes that influenced children’s authors such as Beatrix Potter and Postman Pat creator, John Cunliffe.

Excursion 1

We will start the day in Hawkshead with a visit to the Beatrix Potter Gallery. The Beatrix Potter Gallery displays original items from our collection in this year's exhibition 'That Corner of the Lake District'. For anyone who has ever been enchanted by Beatrix’s endearing characters, the gallery is the place to go to marvel at these miniature masterpieces. This unique space occupies a 17th-century building which served as the office of Beatrix's solicitor husband.

Hawkshead is also the Grammar School that William Wordsworth Attended. The afternoon will be spent at Brantwood.  A historic house, museum and vibrant centre for the arts, Ruskin’s former home has a wealth of things to see and do for the whole family. Brantwood offers a fascinating insight into the world of John Ruskin and the last 28 years of his life spent in the Lakes. Filled with many fine paintings, beautiful furniture and Ruskin’s personal treasures, the house retains the character of its famous resident. Visitors are free to explore the house and grounds.

Evening Reading from John Ruskin

Excursion 2

Your first stop will be Dove cottage where you will be able to explore the traditional Lakeland cottage and home of the famous poet William Wordsworth and discover what life was like at the turn of the 19th Century.

Dove Cottage was the first family home of Britain's greatest poet, William Wordsworth. He lived here 1799 - 1808, moving into the former pub initially with his sister. Settling in this enchanting place in the heart of his 'native mountains' meant that he was able to concentrate on writing and this period was his most inspired and productive. Wordsworth was buried at St Oswald's Church in the village. You will then travel to the shores of Ullswater where Wordsworth was inspired to write the Poem Daffodils. The coach will stop in Glenridding for a coffee stop, before returning to the hotel.

Evening Reading from William Wordsworth

Excursion 3

The Postman Pat Route & Sedbergh

Today starts with a pause outside the old post office that was John Cunliffe’s inspiration for the post office in Greendale for Postman Pat. Then along the road to fictional Greendale.

The real location is a small road though Longsleddle. The coach will return along the Longsleddle road and head for Sedbergh.

Sedbergh is England official book town. There are only about eight bookshops in Sedbergh, depending on exactly what you count as a book shop. However, Westwood Books, is extremly large, situated at the eastern end of Main Street is a family‑run enterprise that moved to Sedbergh in 2005. The former cinema is home to about 70,000 titles at any one time and it's the sort of place where browsers can lose all sense of time. It's worth a visit in its own right.

However, Westwood's is not Sedbergh's only attraction for bibliophiles. There are other smaller shops selling books in the town itself.

I have taught Patchwork and Quilting classes for the last eighteen years in Adult Education and many private guilds throughout the UK.  My aim is to reach out to Beginners and experienced Quilters alike and share with them my love and enthusiasm of such an interesting hobby.  I would encourage beginners in all the basic patchwork skills and all the safety aspects of their tools and equipment, enabling them to begin projects with confidence.

The more experienced students would be encouraged to further their horizons with more challenging projects.

I am always happy for any Quilters to just come and enjoy a relaxing week finishing off their own projects.

Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and well preserved medieval castles in England.

Fully roofed and with an enchanting early Tudor courtyard the stout towers of the gatehouse only hint at the splendour which is revealed as the visitor enters the castle grounds.

Facing the gatehouse there is a large tower, originally the watchtower - the most important feature of the castle's defences. To its left is the present entrance to the inner core of the stronghold. After the castle why not visit the market as Skipton Market is unique in the way it operates. Its history dates back to medieval times, when a Royal Charter from King John granted consent to 'The Lord of the Honour' of Skipton Castle to hold a fair on Skipton High Street.  If you don’t fancy the market then how about a stroll along the canal

Explore some of the Lake District’s finest gardens by minicoach. During this break, led by our Blue Badge Guide, we will visit private gardens, meet their owners and discover some of their secrets, as well as visiting some of the large gardens open to the public. At this time of year, roses and herbaceous borders are at their best in Cumbria and there is a wonderful choice of gardens.

The Holiday….

Day 1

We begin by visiting the home of the Lakeland Horticultural Society at Holehird.  Run by volunteers, this wonderful garden high above Windermere has marvellous views to complement the plants.  With areas devoted to different types of plants, there is something to delight around every corner.

We then head to Crosthwaite for a garden full of contrasts.  From wild woodland to steep rock garden, the owners of Low Fell created the garden over several years from an untamed wilderness.

We end the day at Yewbarrow Lodge with stunning views over Morecambe Bay.  Steep paths and steps take you around a garden with its own microclimate which enables exotic plants to thrive.

Lunch is provided today.

Day 2

Our first visit is to a suburban His & Hers garden in Kendal.  The owners are both artists and the artistic eye is evident in the planting.  Of manageable size, there are borders which could be recreated in most gardens.

We then travel to Levens to see a delightful garden full of plants and a surprise garden feature!

A second garden in Levens has something of interest for every time of the year.

Lunch is provided today.

Day 3

A day off for you to explore the area at leisure or simply relax at the hotel.

Day 4

Back to Levens for another wonderful garden full of interesting plants.  Chat to the owners in the conservatory over tea and cake about your favourite plants and gardens.

The afternoon is spent at Levens Hall.  Probably the most magnificent example of topiary in the country, Levens also has a lot more to offer.  With interesting planting at different times of year, the borders will hopefully be looking good now.  There is also plenty of time to explore the house and just sit and enjoy the garden.

Buy your own lunch in the onsite cafe or take a picnic with you.

Day 5

Our final day takes us to the Silverdale area.  We start at a farm near Milnthorpe where the garden just kept expanding and then head down to Warton where a long narrow garden has been divided up into a series of rooms.  A series of steps takes you to the top from where you can appreciate the whole garden and the lovely views.

In the afternoon we visit Leighton Hall, home of the Gillow family of furniture makers.  We will have a guided tour of the house and you will then be free to wander around the garden at leisure.

Buy your own lunch or take a picnic.

What Should I Bring

Many of the gardens have steep areas with steps.  These can be slippery if wet.  Sturdy shoes with good soles are recommended.  Whatever the weather forecast, bring a raincoat and umbrella - they can be left on the minibus.  If you have walking poles or a foldable stool, these are recommended.

Please telephone Abbot Hall Hotel on 015395 32896 for more informaiton.

It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner or have years of experience – this is a perfect holiday for you, offering a miscellany of patchwork techniques and projects suitable for all abilities.

Meet one of our guides....

Jenny Almond

I have always been interested in craft work most of my adult life. However, Patchwork and Quilting is my passion!

The Holiday:

Our patchwork & Quilting Holidays will appeal to both the seasoned and novice quilter.  From our Concert Hall, with views over Morecambe Bay, you can enjoy the comforts of this beautiful house while you receive expert tuition and guidance.

Join our expert tutor Jenny Almond, with a choice of projects for you to work on.  The structure of quilting workshops will be flexible, allowing you to work at your own pace and to achieve your own goals for the holiday.

Course tuition will run every day, unless otherwise stated from 9:30 to 12:30 each day, with scheduled lunch and morning coffee breaks. The afternoons are free for you to explore the local area or take the time to develop your own project.

What shall I bring? You will be required to bring your own general sewing kit (scissors, needles, pins, safety pins, cottons and rotary cutter) & sewing machine We are always on hand to offer advice if you are unsure and recommend that beginners students telephone prior.
